Local Places to Love

From black sand beaches and mountain walking tracks to hidden rural roads and small-town gems, Taranaki offers adventure in every direction. The landscape shifts quickly here, from alpine views and rolling farmland to dramatic coastline and wide open skies.

Here are a few of our favourite places to explore during your stay, handpicked experiences that showcase the spirit, scenery and stories that make Taranaki truly unforgettable.

Ohawe Beach

A Photographer’s Dream

South of Hāwera, Ohawe Beach is known for its dramatic clay cliffs, sweeping ocean views and ever-changing shoreline. The layered cliff faces glow in the late afternoon light, drawing photographers and sunset seekers to this quieter stretch of coast.

Look closely at the layered papa rock and clay cliff faces and you’ll notice fossilised shells embedded in the sediment. These ancient marine remnants are a reminder that this coastline was once beneath the sea — a quiet geological story revealed.

Less crowded than the northern beaches, wild, open and unmistakably west coast, it’s one of Taranaki’s most striking coastal walks.

Fitzroy Beach

Taranaki’s Famous Black Sand

Just a short drive outside New Plymouth, Fitzroy Beach is one of Taranaki’s most iconic coastal destinations, known for its dramatic black sand shoreline and relaxed seaside vibe. With patrolled swimming areas in summer, consistent surf breaks for all levels with easy access from the city and to the award-winning Coastal Walkway, it’s perfect for long walks, picnics, family fun or simply watching the Tasman Sea stretch to the horizon.

Whether you’re chasing waves, strolling with a coffee or catching a sunset, Fitzroy captures the essence of Taranaki’s wild west coast.

Experience

More Than a Place to Stay

At Mountain Lake Lodge, the experience goes beyond your room. Wander through the gardens, watch ducks glide across the lake or unwind by the firepit as the stars appear overhead. Here, life moves a little slower, shaped by open skies, mountain views and the simple rhythms of rural Taranaki.
