Stratford, Taranaki

The Romeo & Juliet Glockenspiel

Daily Shows

Town Landmark

In the heart of Stratford, Taranaki stands one of the town’s most charming and unique attractions — the Romeo & Juliet Glockenspiel. Mounted high on the Stratford Clock Tower in Broadway, this small theatrical performance brings William Shakespeare’s famous love story to life several times each day.

Stratford proudly embraces its Shakespearean identity, taking its name from Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Throughout the town you’ll find references to the playwright’s works, from street names inspired by his characters to public art and cultural events. The glockenspiel is one of the most memorable ways this literary connection is celebrated, drawing visitors to pause and watch the brief but delightful performance.

Mini Theatre

A Shakespearean Love Story

Installed in the Stratford Clock Tower in 1997, the Romeo & Juliet Glockenspiel has become one of the town’s most recognisable attractions. Several times each day, small doors open on the clock tower balcony and two mechanical figures — Romeo and Juliet — appear to reenact the famous balcony scene from Shakespeare’s classic play.

As music plays from the glockenspiel bells, the animated figures move through a short performance depicting the romantic moment between the two characters. It’s a charming spectacle that captures the imagination of visitors and locals alike, blending theatre, storytelling, and mechanical artistry high above the street.

A Town Inspired

By The Writings Of Shakespeare

Stratford is well known for its Shakespearean theme, reflecting its namesake town in England, Stratford-upon-Avon. The town centre celebrates this literary connection through street names based on Shakespeare’s characters and plays, along with public artwork and cultural references throughout the area.

The glockenspiel performance takes place four times daily at 10:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm and 7:00pm, making it easy for visitors to pause during a day of exploring Stratford to watch the short show unfold. The Tudor-style clock tower itself has become a recognisable landmark along Broadway and a favourite photo spot for visitors passing through town.

For travellers exploring the Taranaki region, the Romeo & Juliet Glockenspiel offers a fun and distinctly local experience — a small theatrical moment that perfectly reflects Stratford’s creative personality and its connection to one of the world’s most famous playwrights.
