Exploring Mt Taranaki’s Stratford Side

Manganui Gorge Track & Ski Field

Scenic Views

Suspension Bridge

Driving up the Stratford side of Mt Taranaki leads to one of the mountain’s most dramatic viewpoints. From the Stratford Plateau car park, the track begins its climb toward the gorge and the nearby Manganui Ski Field, revealing rugged volcanic landscapes and sweeping alpine views. With a striking suspension bridge, steep rocky valleys and the towering slopes of Mt Taranaki rising above the track, this walk offers a powerful introduction to the mountain’s wild alpine environment.

A Walk Above the Gorge

Starting at Stratford Plateau

The walk begins at the Stratford Plateau car park, a large viewing area that sits high on the mountain’s Stratford side. From here the track climbs steadily toward Manganui Gorge, immediately revealing the rugged volcanic terrain that defines this part of the mountain.

As the trail rises, the landscape opens up to steep valleys, rocky slopes and alpine vegetation. The higher you climb, the more dramatic the views become, with Mt Taranaki dominating the skyline above the gorge.

It’s a popular starting point for visitors exploring the mountain, and even the lower sections of the walk offer spectacular scenery.

Crossing the Gorge

A Bridge Over Volcanic Rock

One of the most memorable parts of the walk is the suspension bridge crossing Manganui Gorge. The bridge spans the rocky valley below, providing incredible views down into the gorge and across the surrounding slopes.

The bridge itself has been built in recent years, replacing the older walking route that once descended into the gorge before climbing back up the other side. You can still see sections of that original track below, winding through the volcanic boulders.

Nearby, remnants of the old goods lift system remain visible. Historically this lift transported equipment across the gorge to support operations at the nearby ski field, offering a fascinating glimpse into the working history of the mountain.

Standing on the bridge with the rugged gorge below and Mt Taranaki rising above is one of the highlights of the walk.

Climbing Higher

Toward the Ski Field

Beyond the bridge, the track continues climbing toward Manganui Ski Area, one of the two ski fields on Mt Taranaki. The route becomes steeper and more alpine as it follows the contours of the mountain through rocky slopes and hardy alpine vegetation.

While the walk requires a reasonable level of fitness, it’s a popular route enjoyed by people of many ages. During our visit there was a steady flow of walkers making their way up the track, many stopping to admire the views or take photos along the way.

The landscape here feels wild and powerful — volcanic rock formations, moss-covered ground and alpine plants clinging to the mountainside. Even exploring the lower section of the track near the gorge is enough to appreciate how dramatic the Stratford side of Mt Taranaki really is.
