Potaema Walking Track

An Easy Forest Walk on Mount Taranaki

Wheelchair Access

Forest Moss

The Potaema Walking Track is one of the easiest and most rewarding short walks on the Stratford side of Mount Taranaki. Located along Pembroke Road as you head toward the mountain, it’s often the first forest walk visitors encounter on the way up.

This short loop takes around 15–20 minutes and follows a wide boardwalk through beautiful native forest. With its wheelchair-accessible path and gentle gradient, it’s a walk that almost anyone can enjoy.

A Living Green Landscape

A Forest of Moss and Ferns

What makes the Potaema Track so special is the dense alpine forest that surrounds the trail. The trees here are covered in layers of moss, ferns, lichens and epiphytes — plants that grow on other plants without harming them.

Branches and trunks seem to disappear beneath soft green moss, while delicate ferns and hanging plants create a layered forest canopy above the walkway. The air feels cool and damp, giving the forest a quiet, almost ancient atmosphere.

This type of vegetation is typical of the montane rainforest found on the slopes of Mount Taranaki, where frequent rainfall and mist allow mosses and epiphytic plants to thrive.

Boardwalk Through Native Forest

An Accessible Walk for Everyone

One of the best things about the Potaema Track is how accessible it is. Much of the walk follows a wide boardwalk that gently winds through the forest, making it suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and visitors who prefer a shorter, easier walk.

Despite its accessibility, the track still feels immersive. The boardwalk carries you through dense native forest where towering trees, ferns and moss-covered trunks surround the path.

It’s an ideal stop if you’re heading further up the mountain but want a quick walk to experience the forest first.

Mount Taranaki Reveals Itself

A Rewarding Mountain View

At the end of the trail, the forest opens slightly to reveal a beautiful view of Mount Taranaki rising above the trees. On a clear day the mountain appears dramatic and close, reminding you just how quickly the landscape rises from forest to alpine terrain.

For such a short walk, the Potaema Track offers a surprising amount — rich native forest, peaceful surroundings and a memorable view of the mountain.

If you’re exploring the Stratford side of the national park, it’s a perfect place to stretch your legs before continuing further up the mountain.
